B IS FOR BURCHELL’S COUCAL (Centropus burchellii)

Burchell's Coucal

After this long dry winter we could do with hearing the beautiful liquid calls of the Burchell’s Coucal again, sounding as they do like water bubbling up from a spring. Burchell’s Coucals are often called ‘rain birds’ for many associate it with the onset of summer rain. I greatly admire their colouring. This one has been photographed within the tree foliage of summer. Although I have already recorded how one of them made short work of the Cape Robin chicks in our garden, they also eat rodents – which they are welcome to!
