I have mentioned before that we are blessed with a variety of yellow indigenous flowers that brighten up the countryside. The blooms of the Bitou bushes still abound; lower down though are beautiful stands of other yellow flowers that create swathes of yellow along the sides of the roads and among the veld grass: Metalasia aurea. It is commonly known in Afrikaans as either geelsteekbossie or geelblombos.
Metalasia aurea is a densely branched shrub with needle-like, prickly leaves arranged in tight, twisted knots.
The small flowers are arranged in flat topped clusters composed of papery bracts. They attract a variety of insects and are indigenous to the Eastern Cape.
It reminds me a bit of a spiky, bushy yarrow – the Asteraceae are such successful plants!

They are: South Africa hosts about 250 species of them too 🙂

An unusual flower, this.

Thank you, Pete. It seemed as if the wind was determined to blow each time I pointed my camera towards these flowers 🙂

That’s the way it goes sometimes, yet you captured them very well.

We tend to ignore the small flowers in the field, pass them by because they are not SO spectacular

Yet, when a lot of them bloom together, they can make a magnificent show!

Reminds me of yarrow, too. What a lovely spread of yellow Metalasia Aurea must bring to the landscape.

Very pretty… they look like they would dry well for arrangements if picked in bud. A bit of summer for the winter months.

They seem to keep their colour for a while so would look good in an end-f-season arrangement.

A swathe of them dotting the grassland is really beautiful to behold.
By the way, Anne – have you had a bit of rain yet?
